The Truth About Supplements: Part 1

By May 5, 2017 September 4th, 2019 Health

One of the most common questions I get as a Health & Fitness Coach is “What About Supplements”?

I usually answer that question with something clever like “what about supplements”?  Which usually results in the following more specific questions and my subsequent responses to each which I will of course share with you below!

Q.)  Are supplements necessary for “optimal health”?

A.)  The key words here are “optimal health”…  I would love to tell you the answer is NO…If you eat a good variety of Lean Proteins (naturally grown of course),   untreated (without chemicals) vegetables, and healthy fats in proper proportion every day you don’t need to supplement! Unfortunately this just isn’t the world we are living in! Trying to find any food in our stores or restaurants that haven’t been in some way chemically treated or altered either in the growing, raising, processing or  transporting process is almost impossible.  Then you add in the fact that the soils that are foods and feed are grown in are depleted of much of their natural minerals and other nutrients due to over farming, chemicals in the soil etc. that leave the food we eat lacking in many of their essential nutrients even before we start messing with them. Throw in on top of that the fact that our bodies are not able to assimilate many of the nutrients we take in due to the way we cook our foods and our crazy,  stress filled lifestyles,  the answer to the original question becomes much clearer!  Yes, in my humble opinion supplementation may be necessary for “optimal health”! Which usually leads to question number 2…

Q.) But how do you know which supplements to take and which brand to buy as there are so many to choose from and everybody claims theirs are the best?

A.) This is where things get a little more difficult to answer! The unfortunate truth is that the supplement business is “a bit shady”, to say the least! This a huge, mostly unregulated industry filled with greedy scammers trying to profit from your ignorance! There are way more “bad” products than “good” and it is really hard to know what to look for and quite frankly most people aren’t interested in taking the time to learn so they either just by the cheapest or they buy based on what a friend or someone else has told them!  The end result is you end up with very expensive urine and not much benefit to your health!

In part 2 of this article I will explain in more detail what to look for and what to look out for when choosing your supplements and I will share with you the products I choose based on my experience and research!
