Summer Fun & Fitness Tips!

By July 30, 2015 September 4th, 2019 Fitness

Summer is a GREAT time of the year, particularly here in the Pacific Northwest   where warm sunny days and comfortable evening temperatures are common place.   Summer is a great time to be outside doing the things we love to do like hiking, biking, water sports, camping, sunbathing and of course my two favorite summer activities golf and barbeques!

Summer can be a difficult time to maintain our fitness and healthy eating routine because of all those Barbeques and other social engagements that revolve around fattening foods and “adult beverages”, not to mention that many people tend to fall out of their regular workout routines because they do not want to go inside to work out on beautiful sunny days

As I have explained in the past, the combination of eating “fattening foods” like Hamburgers or any other meat smothered in Barbeque Sauce (filled with sugars) along with mayonnaise based cold salads like potato, macaroni or cold slaw are fattening enough by themselves… and then you add alcohol to the mix your body is going to store a lot of fat!

One of the main reasons for this, besides just the amount of calories you are ingesting, is that when you consume alcohol of any kind your body’s first priority is to “metabolize” or get the alcohol out of your system. When the body is focused on this priority it tends to send everything you have just eaten to the fat cells to be dealt with later.

But on the bright side, summer  can also be a good time of the year for getting fit,  primarily because we tend to be more active and in general we tend to eat smaller meals when the weather get’s warm.  If we can learn to manage the “barbeque challenge” along with controlling the alcohol consumption,   summer can be a good time to drop a little body fat.

Here are a few tips on managing your alcohol consumption:

  • If you are going to have more than 1 or 2 drinks with a meal, avoid or limit the high impact carbohydrates like chips, bread, pasta particularly if they are going to be combined with fatty foods like cheese, mayonnaise and all forms of sugar.
  • If you know you are going to have more than 1 or 2 drinks limit your foods to protein and veggies whenever possible.
  • Watch your mixes in your hard drinks as many of them are filled with sugar or other sweetners like high fructose corn syrup. Some of the worst are tonic water, margarita mix, fruit juices and pop. Best choices are club soda and water.
  • Remember alcohol is a diuretic and it will dehydrate you very quickly,  so a good strategy is to make sure you have your Cerra Water with you and alternate a glass of water in between drinks to slow down the amount consumed and to keep you hydrated.

While we are on the topic of hydration, if you read my FREE SPECIAL REPORT you now understand how hydration affects the body’s ability to burn or store fat as well as, how necessary it is for all bodily functions and our health in general. You also learned that it is estimated that 9 out of 10 of us are not consuming enough water on a daily basis leaving us in a dehydrated state! Obviously during the warm summer months it is even more important to keep ourselves properly hydrated and the best way I know  to do this is by drinking Cerra Water because not only is it the best tasting, healthiest water I have ever tasted, it also hydrates the body up to 6 times faster and more completely than any other water around!
